Toward this, we propose a series of techniques to collect data; identify opioid jargon terms used in the anonymous marketplaces and forums; and profile the opioid commodities, suppliers, and transactions. Cryptomarkets are a focus for the gentrification hypothesis which proposes that a combination of long-established social, economic and technical conditions is serving to reduce the importance of violence and predation in drug distribution 17, 43. Drug delivery has displaced street- or house-based exchanges in some circumstances; drug markets have become segmented by class and race; and the opportunities for combining drug dealing with other vice-exploitation crimes has declined 44. Cryptomarkets extend some of these developments, seeking to emphasise conflict resolution, cooperation and professionalism and punish predation 45, 46, making their ethos more attractive to buyers and dealers 47. That may serve to reduce some of the collateral harms of the illicit drug market 48 while at the same time concentrating risk and systemic violence among an already marginalised segment of the drug-using population that has little access to drug-delivery methods.
How Marketplaces Vet Buyers And Sellers
One study, published by the International Journal of Drug Policy, scrutinized lab results of more than 200 samples of drugs that were purchased on so-called cryptomarkets and collected by a Spanish NGO from 2014 to 2015. The study found more than 90 per cent of the samples contained the drugs they were sold as, and that most samples were of high purity. “There’s a shift from the old way of the drug trade to more of a modern, technological and digital era of selling drugs.” In Calgary, police say it’s difficult to pinpoint how many drug users are flocking to the dark net — and how much they’re buying — because the markets change constantly. But like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole, law enforcement agencies around the world employ new tactics to stamp out anonymous markets, only to see new ones pop up.

To better understand the potential bundling relationship of opioid suppliers across different marketplaces, we calculated the Jaccard similarity coefficient between the suppliers in different marketplaces (Figure 6). We found that 182 opioid supplier IDs appeared in both the marketplaces Evolution and Agora from January 2014 to July 2015. In particular, we observed that 84 opioid supplier IDs synchronized similar product listings in both marketplaces at the same time.

But it also allows for the purchase of illegal drugs online, making some homes the scene of a drug transaction—often with parents or partners having no idea—and thus circumventing the need for either a prescription or pharmacy, or the visit to a drug dealer in person.

In the last stage, we analyzed comparisons of its distribution across areas to assess the public health burden of drug impact. For this step, the statistical methods include observational statistics, building diagrams, and mapping by the regions of Russia. We implemented Spearman correlations analysis to find and measure levels of associations between darknet marketplace and official health statistics variables.

Looking at this picture, we can say that opiate supply is most common in the Northern Caucasus and Southern Siberia regions and Central Russia and less common in the “rich” regions. Large cities such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg are also affected more by opiates, as they are the gates for the drug flow into the country. The less populated regions of Siberia are less affected by opiates in Russia. Figure 4 illustrates the distribution of opiates by region, setting the stage for the subsequent discussion on regional public health impacts.
But another factor that’s worthy of consideration is the way in which drug dealers and darknet vendors are diversifying their offering and creating a more reliable service—even in the face of transnational cybercrime crackdowns and rampant fraudulent activity. And although the dark web offers anonymity for its user base, someone can still be arrested for buying or selling drugs on the dark web, which can result in a federal drug trafficking offense due to the national and international nature of these transactions. What current policing strategies neglect is that dark web markets are not isolated to the storefronts that are the popular target of crackdowns. These are communities stretched across dark and surface web forums which develop shared tutorials and help one another adapt to any new changes. These closures bind users together and foster a shared resilience and collective experience in navigating these environments.

One impact is to foreground each drug being sold as a specific branded consumer product with pharmacological attributes that can be closely assayed. This process thus draws on and brings together people’s cumulative experiential and subcultural knowledge, in common with other online drug-focused forums that discuss not just the quality of each drug, but what the drug is to them as a categorical object 36. Easier availability may reduce temptations to hoard 37, but tendencies towards vendors selling solely or at discounted rates in larger quantities may counteract that. The benefits of making large purchases means that purchases are often made with the intent of social supply 38. Some cryptomarket users exhibit more isolated use patterns such as using MDMA/Ecstasy, cocaine and LSD alone 39.
