The United States is experiencing a synthetic opioid epidemic that has claimed thousands of lives due to street drugs being adulterated with other drugs, such as fentanyl. Fentanyl is an incredibly powerful and deadly narcotic, with doses as low as two milligrams (a dose so small it could fit on the tip of a pencil) being potentially deadly. While it is never recommended to consume any illicit substances, it is critical that you or the people you know test any drugs you may ingest for fentanyl. Several non-profit harm reduction organizations, such as DanceSafe, offer fentanyl testing strips and at-home drug testing kits. Dr. Paloma Lehfeldt, MD, MA, is deeply committed to advancing plant medicine and advocating for the integration of psychedelics into mental health care.
Dietary Sources And Supplementation Of Phenylethylamine
Furthermore, like (+)amphetamine, MDMA was a potent locomotor stimulant58 whereas PMMA failed to increase mouse locomotor activity up to doses of 30 mg/kg (higher doses were not examined). Because MDA and both its optical isomers substituted in MDMA-trained rats,53 it seemed that aryl substituents, rather than the N-methyl group, were dictating the stimulus action of these agents. None of this is to raise alarm bells about the addictive potential of MDMA or demonize amphetamine and cathinones.

After 3 washes for 10 min, the stop solution was added into the wells, and then the absorbance was measured at 450 nm in a GloMax microplate multimode reader (Promega, Madison, WI, USA). Β-PEA and a DAD1R antagonist, SCH23390, were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA). The intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection for SCH23390 was determined based on a previous study 63. For self-administration studies, a working solution of saline or β-PEA was filtered through a syringe-mounted 0.22-µm Minisart® Syringe Filter (Sartorius Stedim Biotech, Goettingen, Germany) immediately before use.

-B Unique Effects May Include Changes To:
This group includes several substances with hallucinogenic properties such as diphenhydramine (DHT), trifluoperazine (TFA), and quetiapine (SQP). However, it isomers of the phenethylamine group are the focus of much research and studies. The two most common chemical neurotransmitters are epinephrine and norepinephrine. The two chemicals stimulate the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Although it’s mainly used as a neurotransmitter in the human brain, phenethylamine can also be produced in other organisms.
The document from legislators in New York also stated that some users were admitted to psychiatric hospitals where they continued to suffer neurological and mental problems after the drugs wore off. Be cautious before beginning to take any new supplements, and talk with your health provider if you’re unsure if it’s safe for you. Decrease your dosage if you experience side effects like accelerated heart rate, anxiety and nervousness. Interestingly, some studies suggest that it may also support weight loss by leading to reduced fluid retention and less need for water. Based on recent research, it seems to defend against depression, poor attention span and even weight gain, especially when coupled with other lifestyle changes and treatments. Our team includes licensed nutritionists and dietitians, certified health education specialists, as well as certified strength and conditioning specialists, personal trainers and corrective exercise specialists.

Phenethylamine Adverse Side Effects May Include:
- We selected a high-affinity/high-efficacy 5-HT2 serotonin receptor agonist (i.e., DOB) and attempted to reduce its lipophilicity.
- Some of these medications for depression include fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), imipramine (Tofranil), and others.
- Desipramine (Norpramin) can affect how quickly this protein clears phenethylamine.
- One study in schizophrenic patients found lower amounts of phenethylamine and its metabolite, phenylacetic acid, in cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) 20.
- Pharmaceutical drugs that are substituted phenethylamines include phenelzine, phenformin, and fanetizole, among many others.
And used irresponsibly could produce the same dangerous side effects as anything else in the amphetamine-class of compounds. Some naturopaths are beginning to prescribe PEA instead of stimulants like amphetamines or methylphenidate to treat ADHD. Many neurohackers prolong the effects of PEA by using it with a monoamine oxidase-B inhibitor (MAOI) like selegiline (L-Deprenyl), hordenine, or Oat Straw. The half-life of PEA taken as a nootropic supplement is only 5 – 10 minutes.v Because it’s quickly degraded by monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B).
St John’s Wort For Depression

Therefore, in this study, we demonstrated the effects of β-PEA on addictive behaviors and emotional states and revealed the mechanisms underlying β-PEA-induced addictive-like behaviors in rodents. First, we performed an open-field test to determine whether acute systemic administration of β-PEA induces psychomotor function in mice. Second, we measured the rewarding effect of β-PEA in mice using the CPP test. Third, for the first time, we examined the effects of β-PEA on affective state by analyzing USVs. Fourth, we determined whether β-PEA produces a reinforcing effect using a rat self-administration paradigm.

The dangers and risks of heart attack and death from taking MDMA and methamphetamines are well-known 69, 70, 71. While phenethylamine supplements are thought to be relatively safe for humans, high doses of phenethylamine supplements have been shown to cause death in mice 68. Note that taking phenethylamine supplements is different from taking substituted phenethylamines, which should be taken with extreme caution as they have been shown to cause schizophrenia-like psychosis 21, 65. Imitations of drugs are also created to be undetectable and are marketed as “legal highs.” So-called “designer drugs” have been manufactured from phenethylamines since the 1960s and are extremely dangerous 63, 64. Other substituted phenethylamines, like amphetamines, can also alter behavior and may cause hallucinations 57. Exercise may improve mood and it has been linked to increased brain phenethylamine in limited studies 36, 37.
Phenethylamine And Monoamine Oxide
We recommend against phenethylamine supplements until their safety has been fully verified. People taking MAO inhibitors, which are used for treating depression, anxiety, and other neurological illnesses like Parkinson’s, or those that have a condition known as phenylketonuria (PKU) should not take phenethylamine. Research suggests that phenethylamine passes easily through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Studies in dogs suggest that phenethylamine had a very short half-life (5 to 10 minutes) 54. Some studies have found phenethylamine in chicken and fish and suggest this may be because of bacterial contamination 48, 49.
Dopamine β-hdroxylase (DBH) is a Cu-based oxidoreductase that controls dopamine transformation into norepinephrine (Figure 2) in several neuron types (like adrenergic or noradrenergic ones) 140. Limited studies have been developed on the use of modified 2-phenethylamines to target DBH. Kruse et al. 141 developed 2-vinyl- and 2-alkynyl-based 2-phenethylamines with moderate vitro activities (Figure 9).

Patients presenting with dysphoria should be placed in a calm and quiet environment until signs and symptoms of intoxication are minimized 44. Rapid sedation, fluid resuscitation, and reduction of hyperthermia are the foundation of excited delirium treatment. If autonomic hyperactivity secondary to abnormal dopamine processing is to blame for the clinical presentation of excited delirium, then rapid sedation of the patient and attenuation of catecholamines is the goal. Benzodiazepines, neuroleptics, or both in combination are commonly used to treat agitated patients.
